The term is used loosely across the drainage industry, and it describes three completely different pieces of kit. One sits in a manhole near your boundary. One sits in the ground on a slope. What Is an Interceptor Drain?

The word “interceptor” describes the function, not the object. The Three Types of Interceptor Drain Explained

There are three distinct components commonly called interceptor drains in the UK: interceptor traps, cut-off drains, and oil interceptors. Each was designed to solve a different problem, and each appears on a different type of property.

1. The Interceptor Trap (Buchan Trap)

An interceptor trap is a fireclay U-bend fitted into the final inspection chamber on a property, just before the private drain joins the public sewer. It holds a permanent water seal that blocks sewer gases and rodents from travelling back up the drain and into the house.

You will also see it called a Buchan trap, a disconnecting trap, a boundary trap, or a sewer trap. Same component, different names. Victorian engineers installed them widely because the medical thinking of the time held that cholera was airborne, so sealing the house drains off from the main sewer was seen as a public health measure.

2. The Cut-Off Drain (Land Drainage Interceptor)

A cut-off drain is a perforated pipe laid in a gravel-filled trench across a slope, positioned to intercept groundwater and surface run-off before it reaches a building or a garden. It collects the water and redirects it to a soakaway, a ditch, or a surface water drain.

The Building Regulations deal with this under Approved Document C, which covers subsoil drainage and requires adequate provision where groundwater would otherwise pass into a building or damage its structure.

3. The Oil Interceptor (Separator)

An oil interceptor, correctly called a separator, is an underground chamber that holds back oil, petrol, and diesel from surface water run-off before that water discharges to a drain or watercourse. It works on density: oil floats, water passes underneath and out.

These are commercial installations. Forecourts, garages, vehicle workshops, goods yards, boatyards, and larger car parks all fall into scope, and getting the specification wrong carries legal consequences rather than just plumbing ones.

Of the three, the interceptor trap is the one homeowners in Cornwall encounter most often, and it is the one most likely to cause trouble.

Where Is an Interceptor Trap Located on a Property?

An interceptor trap sits in the last inspection chamber before the property boundary, at the point where the private drain connects to the public sewer. In most cases the chamber is under a garden path, a driveway, or a front garden, and it is deeper than the other chambers on the run.

Lift the cover and there are two clear signs you are looking at one:

  • The outlet pipe drops down into a U-bend rather than running straight out of the chamber, and there is standing water sitting in that bend.
  • There is a second, higher opening above the outlet. That is the rodding eye, an access point that lets an engineer rod or jet the section of pipe running out to the sewer.

That rodding eye should have a cap on it. In practice, the original clay caps have been lost, knocked off, or dropped into the trap on most properties, which is where the problems start.

In Cornwall, interceptor traps show up in the Victorian and Edwardian housing stock across Falmouth, Truro, Penzance, Camborne, and Redruth. Terraced streets built for the mining and maritime trade are prime candidates. Properties with an old outhouse or a converted rear privy very often have one. Some are also found on rural properties immediately upstream of an old brick septic tank, where they were used to manage a change in level as much as to seal the system.

Why Interceptor Traps Cause Blockages

Interceptor traps block more often than any other part of a domestic drainage system. The U-bend that makes them work also creates a permanent trap point where solids, silt, wet wipes, and grease collect, and the design offers no self-cleansing flow through the bend.

Four failure modes account for the large majority of the cases our engineers attend:

  1. The rodding eye cap has fallen into the trap. A dislodged clay cap sits in the U-bend and everything else catches on it. The chamber then floods.

Cornwall’s ground conditions make this a common requirement. Granite and shillet bedrock sits close to the surface across much of the county, and heavy clay subsoils sit above it. Water moving downhill hits an impermeable layer, travels laterally just below the surface, and emerges wherever the ground levels off. A cut-off drain is the standard answer in these situations:

  • Properties built into a hillside, where water tracks down and collects against the rear wall.
  • Gardens that sit below fields or higher neighbouring land, particularly on rural and semi-rural sites.
  • Septic tank drainage fields that fail in winter because groundwater is saturating the soil around them. Where Are Oil Interceptors Required on Commercial Sites?

Oil interceptors are required wherever surface water run-off is at risk of oil contamination and that water discharges to a surface water drain, a soakaway, or a watercourse. Vehicle workshops, fuel forecourts, goods yards, boatyards, and larger car parks all fall into scope.

The performance standard is set by BS EN 858, and the design guidance in GPP 3: Use and Design of Oil Separators in Surface Water Drainage Systems is built on it. Two classes exist:

  • Class 1 separators are designed to discharge water containing less than 5 mg per litre of oil, and are required where the discharge goes to a surface water drain or watercourse (GPP 3, 2022 update).
  • Class 2 separators are designed to discharge water containing less than 100 mg per litre of oil, and are suitable where the discharge goes to the foul sewer with the sewerage provider’s agreement.

Separators are also specified as either full retention or bypass. A full retention separator treats the full flow the drainage system can deliver, which GPP 3 sets at the flow generated by rainfall of 65 mm per hour. A bypass separator fully treats flows generated by rainfall up to 6.5 mm per hour and lets heavier flows pass around it, which suits sites where the risk of a significant spillage is low. The Building Regulations also address separators for contaminated paved areas under Approved Document H.

The maintenance obligation is where sites get caught out. BS EN 858-2 requires a high-level alarm, six-monthly servicing as a minimum, and an integrity test at intervals no longer than five years, with records retained. A pollution incident caused by a neglected separator is an offence, not an inconvenience, and Cornwall’s density of watercourses, estuaries, and bathing waters means the Environment Agency takes a close interest in coastal and harbourside sites.

Should You Remove an Interceptor Trap or Repair It?

An interceptor trap that is intact and holding its water seal can stay. One that blocks repeatedly, has a cracked body, or has lost its rodding eye cap into the bend is a liability, and modern drainage has no functional need for it because every appliance in the house has its own trap.

There are three routes forward, and the right one depends on the condition of the trap and the pipework around it.

  1. Clean and cap. Jet the trap clear and fit a new metal rodding eye cap, chained to the chamber wall so it can be lifted if the chamber ever surcharges. The cheapest route, and the correct one where the trap and pipework are sound.
  2. Remove the trap. Break out the U-bend and replace it with a straight-through channel, so the drain runs freely into the sewer. This eliminates the trap point permanently. It requires care and it needs to be done properly, because a botched removal leaves a step in the invert that catches solids just as effectively as the original bend.
